I am interested in ideas around sovereignty and what constitutes Britishness, particularly where it concerns people who were born in the Caribbean, deemed as migrants despite being born British. I wanted to reflect on how Britain benefitted from their contribution, particularly in light of the general Election of 2019 and the impending renegotiation of borders resulting from Brexit and the rise in nationalism. The idea of Britishness fuelling the Brexit debate was firmly rooted in a colonial past, but without the contribution from Britain's commonwealth citizens, how different would our day to day lives have been....?
